![]() There may be some areas in the world where we still have the disease circulating. ![]() The dramatic effects of the pandemic will largely be behind us. ![]() Where do you predict we will be a year from now? The cost on human lives and the economy has been immense, but we already have vaccines to fight it. ![]() This interview, like so many things at the current time, was done virtually.Ī year ago the coronavirus in Wuhan began to quickly spread across the world. Having recently received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, the philanthropist and Microsoft founder talked to EL PAÍS about the current pandemic and the ones to come, the rise of anti-vaxxer movements and pandemic deniers on social media, and his hopes for the new administration of US President Joe Biden. He has a plan, which he explains in detail in his new book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster. He knows that it’s a mammoth task, but he does not think it is an impossible one – not if the business, tech and political sectors work together to reach the goal. Bill Gates argues that the effects of climate change will be much worse than the coronavirus pandemic if we don’t reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() THE Dark Carnival, a film script Bradbury wrote for Gene Kelly in the 1950s. Yeah, I've heard of that. ![]() ![]() Bradbury used this short story as the springboard for an expanded work called The Dark Carnival. Now, before you start screaming, let me explain: this novel has its origins in a previously-published short story, "The Black Ferris" (1948). And Dandelion Wine also looks something like a novel, but is really another collection of previously-published short stories, stitched together into a new patchwork.Īnd that leaves us with the present volume, the definitely, no question about it, never before published original novel Something Wicked This Way Comes.Įxcept. Fahrenheit 451 is barely long enough to count as a novel (it's more of a novella), and in any case is an expansion of a previously published short story, "The Fireman". What do I mean by that? Well, The Martian Chronicles looks something like a novel, but it's really a collection of previously-published short stories, stitched together into a new patchwork. At this point, I've more or less given up! It is - definitely - his first true novel. The Book Something Wicked is Ray Bradbury's twelfth(ish) book, depending how you count them. ![]() ![]() Product Dimensions - 4.5 W x 6.75 H x 0.Schalansky lures us to fifty remote destinations-from Tristan da Cunha to Clipperton Atoll, from Christmas Island to Easter Island-and proves that the most adventurous journeys still take place in the mind, with one finger pointing at a map. ![]() ![]() Using historic events and scientific reports as a springboard, she creates a story around each island- fantastical, inscrutable stories, mixtures of fact and imagination that produce worlds for the reader to explore.Gorgeously illustrated and with new, vibrant colors for the Pocket edition, the atlas shows all fifty islands on the same scale, in order of the oceans they are found. ![]() What drew me to this book is Annabeth Albert's short story published in the Campus Cravings Higher Learning MM Boxed Set anthology. I'm glad that easygoing Robby finally voiced his concerns. They talk about ordinary things, like money and Robby's roommates and food and David's family.Įven though David is withdrawn and doesn't always treat Robby fairly, he does eventually open up to Robby. Robby is Asian, which is totes awesome (more Asian men in M/M, PLEASE!). They aren't rich or ridiculously good-looking. They sure do dance around each other, and it's cute as hell.ĭavid, who was in a closeted relationship for more than a decade, is still grieving the loss of his partner, and Robby's not very good at standing up for what he wants. Or is David the one who puts the moves on Robby? Told in Robby's first-person POV, the story spans the course of a year as shy, awkward Robby finally gets the guts to put the moves on David. ![]() every day, and he always orders the same thing: a vanilla latte. ![]() David comes by for a coffee at 11:50 a.m. Robby is a barista with hipster glasses who runs his own coffee cart business, while David is a financial manager for a nonprofit. ![]() This is a gentle, cozy story about two 20-something-year-old guys meeting, becoming friends, and falling in love. ![]() ![]() ![]() 5 from Simon & Schuster, is a collection of unflinchingly honest essays about the actress's life - from her childhood growing up in one of the poorest neighborhoods of South Central Los Angeles to her days as an in-demand Bar Mitzvah hype girl to her experience as one of Hollywood's leading female comedians. OK, so this memoir is laugh-out-loud funny on paper, but unsurprisingly, it's even more entertaining when read by Tiffany Haddish herself. (You owe it to yourself to watch the video immediately, even if you've already seen it.) Watching video, which has racked up over two million views on YouTube, will give you a small taste of what it feels like to listen to the audiobook version of her new memoir, The Last Black Unicorn. ![]() But when she's not acting, she's also a brilliant storyteller - as evidenced by her appearance earlier this year on Jimmy Kimmel Live, when she told the hysterical story about the time she accidentally went on a Groupon Cajun swamp tour with Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith. ![]() If you've seen Girls Trip, you already know that actress and comedian Tiffany Haddish is magnetic, hilarious, and utterly relatable. ![]() ![]() “We live in a much more friendly world for atheists than we did even 10 years ago,” she says. ![]() Writer Sara Lynn Michener notes that no such controversy has surrounded His Dark Materials, which shows how much the world has changed. “Lyra’s storyline is so amazingly fraught with perils and monsters and weirdness, so cutting back and forth is a good modulator of tension between something fast-paced and serious and something more mysterious,” he says.Ī previous attempt at adapting the series, the 2007 film The Golden Compass, fell victim to a religiously-inspired boycott. By the time Hansen concluded the series with A Country of Old Men (1990), Brandstetter was older, melancholy, and ready for retirement. The book introduced street-smart insurance investigator Dave Brandstetter, a complex, openly gay hero who grew and changed over the series’s twelve novels. Using the pseudonyms Rose Brock and James Colton, Hansen published five novels and a collection of short stories before the appearance of Fadeout (1970), the first novel published under his own name. He began publishing poetry in the New Yorker in the 1950s, and joined the editorial teams of gay magazines ONE and Tangents in the 1960s. The son of a South Dakota shoemaker, he moved to a California citrus farm with his family in 1936. Joseph Hansen (1923–2004) was an American author of mysteries. ![]() |
